Wer weiß schon, dass nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg 300.000 Juden nach Deutschland flohen und als Überlebende der Schoah in DP-Lagern (für »Displaced Persons«, additionally Entwurzelte, Staatenlose) unter dem Schutz der Alliierten ein neues Leben begannen?
1946/47 flüchteten, ausgelöst durch antisemitische Exzesse, 300.000 osteuropäische Juden, besonders aus Polen, ausgerechnet ins Land der Täter. Vor neuer Verfolgung retteten sie sich zumeist in die amerikanische area. Die DPs kamen keineswegs, um hier auf Dauer zu bleiben, sondern glaubten sich nur auf der Durchreise nach Palästina. Ein großer Teil zog schließlich nach der Staatsgründung Israels 1948 dorthin weiter, viele auch in die united states. Das Camp Föhrenwald als letztes der weit über hundert DP-Lager schloss erst Anfang 1957.
Der rote Faden des Buches ist das Schicksal der Lea Waks. In Lodz geboren, überlebte sie das dortige Ghetto. 1946 verließ sie Polen mit ihrer Familie panikartig. Zunächst lebte Lea im DP-Lager Ziegenhain in Hessen, dann mit ihrem Mann Aron und zwei Söhnen in verschiedenen Camps. Diese Lager wurden in Selbstverwaltung geführt, mit allen Elementen traditionellen osteuropäischen Judentums, Synagogen, Schulen, Ausbildungsstätten, Theatern – eben jene Schtetl-Kultur, die Joseph Roth so meisterlich beschrieben hat. Für die Familie Waks dauerte die Lagerzeit allerdings ein ganzes Jahrzehnt. 1957 nahm sie die Jüdische Gemeinde in Düsseldorf auf, wo sie drei Jahrzehnte als Textilkaufleute lebten.
